Bugatti's highly awaited Veyron now in production is most promising yet...

Veyron's looks are controversial but theres no doubt it'll turn a few heads

Not the first time Bugatti have been at the top of this particular list of hyper performance cars. In the mid 90s Bugatti built the EB110 SS to commemorate the anniversary of the companies founder, Ettoire Bugatti. The SS for, super sport, recorded a top speed of 219mph at Nardo shortly after the famous 217mph run by the Jaguar XJ 220 at the same high speed oval. Shortly after this spectacular climax, the Italian manufacturer went bankrupt and ceased building cars.

Now in the 21st century and under the ownership of VW, Bugatti is at it again. The challenge to throw the McLaren off its thrown. Not surprisingly, if Bugatti wanted to built the fastest car ever they had to think big. Very big, in more ways than one.

To start with they were going to need a lot of money (each Veyron costs around £25 million to build) but this has been encouraged by VW chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder . Secondly the engine was going to have to be colossal, hence the whole 8 litre W16 thing. Enough for just short of a very big 1000bhp. A figure never before seen on the specification of a production car.

After much deliberation, a whole lot of hold ups and massive public anticipation the Bugatti was put into production and was on paper at least the fastest production car in the world. If paper wasn’t enough, Bugatti officially timed an average top speed of exactly 252.95mph making it faster than both the McLaren F1 and Koenigsegg CCR and penultimately the worlds fastest production car. Bugatti has sold everyone of it's dream machines built so far but still don't expect to see alot of them around.

Powerplant - no less than 8 litres in capacity, the Veryon is powered by two V8s to make a W16 and as if that wasn't enough four turbochargers to give some extra kick. The power can be varied from inside the car depending on how brave the driver is feeling. Why they wouldn't want to use all 987 horses at all times is beyond me...
