Possibly the maddest supercar ever built...

800bhp and no traction control made for some interesting driving in the Blackpool based Speed 12

On the track - in March 2005 Evo magazine took an example of the Cerbera Speed 12 to Silverstone's South Circuit to see how it would fair on the track. The results were as to be expected - very fast and very loud. Click on the pic below to see footage of the laps. Note the Speed 12 used here is fitted with a special aerodynamic body kit for lighter weight.

W112 BHG with racer carbonfibre body kit is only road going example of 880bhp Speed 12

Unveiled in 1999 and heralded as the new McLaren F1, the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 boasted to be the maddest car in production. 800bhp up front, RWD, no traction control and a power to weight ratio which could destroy a super light Caterham 7. The stats speak for themselves.

There was no doubt that the Blackpool based manufacturer had created a monster. Something with so much power that in it’s earliest form was almost impossible to use. The Cerbera Speed 12 is based on the Cerbera and loosely based on the Speed 12 racer unveiled prior to the production car.

Only a handful of the production versions were ever built. TVR boss at the time had deemed the Cerbera Speed 12 ‘pointless as a road car.’ As a result only one road legal version of the big Cerb exists. Registered W112 BHG is the daddy of all Speed 12s. From it’s standard form back in 1999 it has evolved a lot into what can only be described as a racing monster for the road.

W112 BHG now features a racer carbon fibre body kit to aid aerodynamics and reduce overall weight dramatically. Even with it’s massive year wing considered, the only road legal Speed 12 weighs in at just 975kg! More than 200kg lighter than a McLaren F1 and even more shocking, around the same weight as some Le Mans Prototype racers.

W112 BHG, debatably the worlds quickest road car to 200mph, has a power to weight ratio of 917bhp to the ton. The 7.7 litre V12 in this particular 12 has 880bhp as oppose to the 800bhp found in the original concept. Top speed is expected to be in excess of 240mph although it has yet to be tested to prove this.

Just a pity that only a handful of people ever get to see the big Cerb ripping up the roads, or hear the howl of it’s massive V12, let alone drive it. None the less the Speed 12 is a fitting example of what the British eccentric motor maker can do and that British motor industry still has it in them to produce yet again the fastest car in the world
